Understand the number

A sale price is only the starting point.

Item profit = sale price − item cost − selling postage − selling fees

The calculator uses the same four amounts as Sales Secretary’s item-profit calculation. Enter costs you actually pay. If the buyer pays shipping directly to the carrier or marketplace, that payment is not your selling-postage cost.

A simple example

A sale for 30, with an item cost of 12, postage of 3.50 and fees of 1.50, leaves 13 profit. The entered costs total 17, so an offer of 17 breaks even. This is an illustration, not a predicted sale price.

Fees are fixed amounts you enter, not a live marketplace fee schedule. Break-even assumes these costs stay the same at a different sale price. The selected currency only changes formatting; no currency conversion takes place.

Common questions

Is this my total business profit?

No. This is a calculation for one item. Original purchase postage, packaging, tax, travel, subscriptions and other overheads are not included in these four inputs. Consider those separately before making a business decision.

What if I don’t know what the item cost?

Leave the item cost blank; the calculator will not invent a profit. Entering zero means the item actually cost you nothing. In Sales Secretary, you can flag an unknown original cost when recording a sale.

Why is the result negative?

Your entered costs exceed the sale price. The negative amount is a loss on this calculation. The break-even price shows the revenue needed to cover those same costs.

What’s the difference between this tool and Predictions?

This tool does arithmetic from numbers you enter. Pro Predictions in the app uses your own suitable history to estimate sale prices, sale chances and sales rates. Those estimates can be wrong and are not live market prices.
